Jamie's Corner: The Monster with Wheels

 What is Jamie’s Corner?

Jamie's Corner is a humorous look at life, in particular my life.

In the movies, I am not the elegant lady that walks down the stairs and charms her guests with grace and beauty. I am the one that trips on her gown, spills wine on her new dress and tries to carry on a conversation with spinach stuck in between her teeth. Years ago, it used to affect my sense of self and make my depression worse. But I no longer see it that way. A writer once told me anything that does not go smoothly in life makes for a good story. I agree. And I have lots of stories. View the full archive of Jamie's Corner here.

My story this week is Jamie vs. the Monster with Wheels.

My 18 year-old son was starting college. The problem? He did not yet have a driver’s license. It was time to learn how to ride the bus. The last time I rode the bus was in college, but how hard could it be? I looked up the bus number and time of departure from the stop next to our home. My plan was to go with him the first time. I downloaded the app for the bus, purchased tickets and chose a time a couple of hours before his first class. We boarded Bus 86 and started the first leg of our journey We would meet up with bus 85 for the second leg of the journey.

Ten minutes into our ride and it became apparent that Bus 86 was not going the direction I wanted. I approached the bus driver to verify that I was indeed on Bus 86. The bus driver verified that I was. He proceeded to explain that there were two buses with the number 86, leaving at around the same time. One turned left and one turned right. To me, this was counterintuitive. My son and I got off the bus. We did not have enough time to try and catch the other Bus 86 and make it to his first class. Fortunately, we were near my husband’s work. He picked us up and drove us back home. I then proceeded to drive James to school. He made it in time. I just walked away with a slightly bruised ego.

As I shared my story with a few people I knew, they laughed along with me. I found out several other 3people also had their own bus stories (including one with a very high IQ).

We are still mastering the Monster with Two Wheels. But I know that one day we will get there.
