Jamie's Corner: The Hot Chocolate

What is Jamie’s Corner?

Jamie's Corner is a humorous look at life, in particular my life.

In the movies, I am not the elegant lady that walks down the stairs and charms her guests with grace and beauty. I am the one that trips on her gown, spills wine on her new dress and tries to carry on a conversation with spinach stuck in between her teeth. Years ago, it used to affect my sense of self and make my depression worse. But I no longer see it that way. A writer once told me anything that does not go smoothly in life makes for a good story. I agree. And I have lots of stories.

My story this week is Jamie and The Hot Chocolate

For Christmas one year, my sister bought me a Keurig coffee and tea maker. It was a lot of fun. You could make individual cups of coffee, tea or hot chocolate. They were really gaining in popularity, and you could buy Keurig products everywhere, in the store or online. I decided to get my children hot chocolate as a treat. I ordered it online and it soon arrived. It was excellent and the children loved it. It was bold nut not bitter. I fixed a cup for the children with a little bit of whipped cream before bed. By the third night, however, it became clear that something was amiss. The children were having trouble sleeping. I often gave my children hot chocolate before bed. I know it has some caffeine but the brand I usually used did not pose a problem. Maybe this brand had a lot more caffeine? I decided the pull the wrapper out and take a closer look. I soon found the problem. I was not giving my children hot chocolate. I was giving my children hot chocolate flavored coffee! Here I was giving my 11- and 6-year-old coffee before bed.

The next night my children asked about the hot chocolate. I explained that the hot chocolate was not good for them, and I was not going to give it to them anymore. They continued to pester me as to the reason why. Finally, I admitted to them the reason they could not have their hot chocolate; it was coffee. Of course, this became a family joke. One of the many crazy things that mom did. Adventures of what not to do in child-rearing?

Yes, just another reason why I did not win Mother of the Year again that year. Lol.
