Jamie's Corner: The Jeopardy Champion

What is Jamie’s Corner?

Jamie's Corner is a humorous look at life, in particular my life.

In the movies, I am not the elegant lady that walks down the stairs and charms her guests with grace and beauty. I am the one that trips on her gown, spills wine on her new dress and tries to carry on a conversation with spinach stuck in between her teeth. Years ago, it used to affect my sense of self and make my depression worse. But I no longer see it that way. A writer once told me anything that does not go smoothly in life makes for a good story. I agree. And I have lots of stories.

My story this week: Jamie; The Jeopardy Champion

I enjoy the game show Jeopardy! Like many people, I have been watching this popular U.S. game show for years. I am nowhere near the level of the contestants on this well-known show, but that doesn't mean I don't like to guess the answers. If you haven't seen this show, three contestants compete in answering approximately 60 questions from a large variety of categories from art, history, to science and pop culture. The specific categories vary per episode. The contestants earn a dollar amount for each questions answered. The winner is the one with the most accumulated amount of money at the end of the game. Each time I get an answer correct; I am elated! I have my own scoring system.

I tend to run between average and smart. (Thanks, I know, it is pretty amazing, right?) But last week I answered 6 questions correctly: way above my usual score. As far as I was concerned, I was The Jeopardy Champion that day. Granted, I did not win any money and neither Mayim Bialik nor Ken Jennings will be reaching out to me anytime soon, but I was excited. In my mind, I was a champion.

I love learning but I do not read reams of encyclopedias nor do I have a great memory. Therefore, Jeopardy is not a show I would do well on. But I am not comparing myself to the Jeopardy contestants. I am competing against myself. And whenever you achieve a new PR (personal record), it is worth celebrating!
