Jamie's Corner: My Phone is my BFF

What is Jamie’s Corner?

Jamie's Corner is a humorous look at life, in particular my life.

In the movies, I am not the elegant lady that walks down the stairs and charms her guests with grace and beauty. I am the one that trips on her gown, spills wine on her new dress and tries to carry on a conversation with spinach stuck in between her teeth. Years ago, it used to affect my sense of self and make my depression worse. But I no longer see it that way. A writer once told me anything that does not go smoothly in life makes for a good story. I agree. And I have lots of stories.

My story this week: Jamie and My Phone is my BFF

Reading on a cold and chilly day, I suddenly hear a sound. It sounds like…water…dripping water. But I can’t be sure. I take out my iPhone and check the weather app. Yes, my suspicions are confirmed as I turn to announce, “It’s Raining Outside.” I am only a few feet away from the sliding glass door. But this is not the 1990s. I do what any modern woman does; I use my iPhone.

MY SON: Really?

ME: (I look back down at my phone). Yes, it sure is.

MY SON: You know, the sliding glass door is only a few feet away.

ME: I suppose so.

MY SON: You could have looked outside the sliding glass door.

ME: What? Is this 1992?

MY SON: Good point. By the way, do you know what time it is?

ME: (Looking down at my iPhone). It is 7:30.

MY SON: But the clock on the wall says it is 8:30.

ME: Oh, that clock? It has been broken for a few years now. Your dad and I just use it as a wall decoration since it has a picture of a ship harbor on it.

MY SON: Yeah, I guess clocks are sort of old-fashioned.

ME: Yep, it’s just art, not really functional anymore. Like I said, it’s not 1992 anymore.

MY SON: Alright. I’m going to be up in my room playing my PlayStation 5 and charge my Nintendo Switch.

ME: Ok, I’ll text you when dinner’s ready.

MY SON: Thanks, mom. I’ll text you later.
